The project comprised of the construction of 3 new extensions to the existing building located at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Internally the original building was remodelled and extensively refurbished to provide new living spaces for workers at the hospital.

Bernard Ireland House is now a multi functional building consisting of office space, a day care centre, staff area and dormitory's for NHS staff.

Logistically the project was a challenge due to the location within a particularly constrained environment and surrounded by 'other' hospital buildings.

The B&S team overcame these challenges and the project was successfully and safely delivered.

The time critical project included fitting out an existing industrial unit with steelwork, metsec, raised access flooring, partitioning, and hygienic wall finishes.

Key to the success of the project was incorporating a large amount of M&E plant and services into an existing structure while maintaining programme and a high standard of quality. This also included the client’s specialist sterile equipment.

In total, 22 Rooms and two main circulation routes in D and E Blocks were refurbished during the project, as well as associated stores, offices and toilets.

The creation of the Open Access Learning Space and PC Laboratory included the alteration and refurbishment of five rooms and a corridor formerly occupied by the NHS to provide a dual purpose IT teaching space/ PC lab, an Open Access Learning Zone and an IT Support Helpdesk.

Extensive mechanical ventilation systems were installed as well as IT requirements for the interactive simulation mannequins.

Our ability to achieve clinical standard finishes and integrate a number of complex services drew praise from our client.

The single storey extension consisted of cavity masonry walls with flat roof of a timber construction and now provides the facility with extra offices and therapy rooms.

The refurbishment element of the works consisted of nine new en-suite bedrooms which were all fitted with anti-ligature fixtures and fittings. Quality of finish and detailing was of the highest standard to ensure both client satisfaction and patient safety.

External works included the construction of an external timber deck, anti climb fencing and other external landscaping works

M&E works were integral to the success of this project, with stringent commissioning & witnessing undertaken to ensure that all systems were adequate for their anti ligature requirements.

The programme of works was to refurbish and alter an existing operating theatre at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

Works were undertaken while all other theatres remained operational, resulting in the need to ensure extremely high standards in cleanliness and continual, close consultation with the Head of Theatres.

A new operating panel was installed as part of the contract, plus new lighting and doors. Specialist paint finishes along with high quality healthcare standard stainless steel fittings were incorporated.

All works were undertaken in strict accordance with NHS hygiene standards.
