30th June 2023

Temporary new starter

Meet Reuben from St Bernadette secondary school in Bristol.

Reuben is studying Business, Geography and Food Tech and has also shown an interest in Digital Marketing.

Reuben joined Bray & Slaughter for the week of the 26th-30th June shadowing the marketing team.

On the first day things were kept quite casual with Reuben starting off by being introduced to everyone around the office. This was a great way for Reuben to learn the different job roles within the construction industry and what they entail.

After introductions Reuben was led to his desk and introduced to Adobe indesign, the software used to create promotional material, posters, tender documents and front pages.

One of the tasks Reuben completed on his first day was to upload a post celebrating Bray & Slaughter’s new work experience student. He completed the process with Zoe our Digital Marketing Apprentice guiding and supervising.

Day 2 and Reuben was formally introduced to our project at Bristol Old Magistrates Courts. The tour comprised of the first four floors including the cells in the basement.

The next day Reuben got experience at an entirely different kind of site at Castle Mead.

While The Courts has a fun chaotic feel Castle Mead is much calmer. With one being a new build as opposed to a refurbishment there was a minor difference in the amount to see. After being introduced to site manager Dan, who is a St Bernadettes allumni himself and has been with Bray & Slaughter for around 27 years, Reuben was walked around the site.

Day 4 included a trip to the countryside as Reuben was taken on a visit to our site in Priston.

A very informative site tour led by Site Manager Bart and a good discussion with our supply chain regarding the method of pitching. A big thank you to Jack from Rowland Stonemasonry for providing a demonstration to bring the process to life, something that Reuben enjoyed greatly.

To finish up the week Reuben got to experience the lighter side of Bray & Slaughter as everyone took part in wrong trouser day.

Even though Reuben himself did not rock any funky trousers the other staff in the office certainly did. Reuben also got to tag along with Zoe to visit the site at 601 Whitchurch Lane.

At the end of the day we bid adeu to Reuben.
